New Year's Plans Finalized!
In the last instance (of 2008) of my incredible ability to procrastinate in all areas of my life, I JUST figured out what I’m doing tonight for NYE. And I’m excited. Here it is:
8:30 pm: Arrive at girlfriend Joy’s NoLita apartment to commence with the champagne-guzzling and h’ors deouvres-eating.
9:30 pm: Arrive at boy Jeffrey’s NoLita apartment with my...
Signed, Sealed, Delivered
I just got home from the signing of my brand new lease on my brand new apartment. Whee!
Feels like a new lease on life. Step One of my New in 09 plan DONE! (Cue cheesy music here—preferably something that “The Hills” has already used.)
Twitter!!
Okay, so I’ve finally got my Twitter up and running. And by that I mean, I signed up in August and I think I’ve finally figured it out and am updating it regularly. So find me! And follow me! If you’re so inclined. I think you can just search me….it’s carolhan. xoxo
Contradictions on Christmas Eve
Happy Christmas Eve!
This holiday, more than any other I can remember, has been a juxtaposition of extreme feelings. On one hand, I’m full of love for my friends and hope for the new year. I just got home from a yummy dinner at Momofuku Ssam Bar with bff Alex Weiss. We exchanged gifts—she gave me a new cookbook I’ve been secretly lusting after and a beautiful silver serving...
New in '09
One of my favorite websites, Guest of a Guest, emailed me to ask what my New Year’s resolution was for 2009 (part of a story they’re working on) and I replied: To cook at home more, to finish my novel, and to cut down on my Billy’s banana cake binges.
It’s a good, PR-friendly soundbite of an answer, no? And yes, I actually do want to accomplish all of those things in the...
Up the Ladder
So I’m finally getting around to reading all of my backlogged emails (there were close to 1000 of them), and I noticed a common thread to several reader emails: a lot of them just wanted to know how I got to where I am right now.
Reader Margaret wrote (all the way back in June—sorry Margaret!!): “I’m currently trying to make a career transition and have been running...
I understand feeling as small and as insignificant as humanly possible. And how...
– Kate Winslet to Jack Black in The Holiday, one of my favorite cheesy Christmas movies. I remember when I first saw it in the theatres about two years ago, I felt an utter disdain for the weakness of Winslet’s character. Now….I have better understanding of what she’s saying.
Johnny and Jane
4 a.m. and I’m on the street blinking back tears, half-walking, half-stumbling down the icy street, watching my breath come out in white puffs of smoke. A yellow taxi comes careening around the bend and passes me by.
You say cats have nine lives but that we only get one. I think that that’s probably true but you’re somehow up to your 14th. Not bad for a human, but it helps that I’m particularly...
Your Thoughts
Hello there! I’ve enabled commenting on this blog so that you can let me know what you’re thinking without having to take the extra step of emailing me (cough, lazybones, cough). I figured that way, more of you would give me your two cents, AND I wouldn’t have that constant feeling of drowning in (not purposefully) unread/unreplied-to emails. Yay! Comment away.
Lessons from the Kitchen
I spread my hands across the gleaming white, freshly scrubbed kitchen counter and take a breath. “Fresh start,” I look up and smile at J. “I love new recipes. They make me feel like I’m starting all over again—and this time, maybe it’ll turn out perfectly.”
J. rolls her eyes and laughs. “You’re crazy. Just get started. I’m craving one of your ridiculously decadent meals.”
And with that, I...
