I heard about a traveling exhibit called The Museum of Broken Relationships today. Their holdings include a discarded wedding dress, love letters, and gall stones. The two curators, who were inspired to create the exhibit by their own painful breakup, invite the public to submit their own mementos for consideration.
The concept is funny to me, but kind of funny in a sad way. If you were given the choice, would you choose to immortalize a breakup by turning it into a work of art? Wouldn’t you rather get up, pack up, and move on?
I guess that’s easier said than done.
In the end, maybe we all immortalize our breakups in one way or another. Maybe it’s unavoidable—whether we let go too fast, let go too slow, or in this case (and ironically, in the personal cases of the curators, who are still choosing to work together regardless of their breakup), don’t let go at all.
