I had a lovely late dinner at Commerce, a new West Village restaurant, last night. It’s located at 50 Commerce Street at the bottom of a quiet U-shaped road. My dinner date and I had:
- Bread basket—this seems obvious and unnecessary to mention, but this particular basket was one of the best I’ve ever had. It included piping hot miniature soft pretzels, flour-dusted baguettes fresh from the oven, olive bread, raisin bread, and sweet bread. We ate two full baskets.
- Salad of 20 herbs and lettuces
- Duck and foie gras rillettes terrine
- Red snapper
- Ragu of odd things: oxtail, trotters and tripe with handmade orecchiette (as I’d just finished reading this month’s issue of Gourmet, which expounds on the joys of fresh finger-pressed orecchiette from Umbria, I had to order this)
After all that food, we strolled down the street to Milk and Cookies for some oven-hot chocolate-chip cookies to cap off the night. What a perfect meal.
